New achievement standards for Tongan language coming soon

Tongan art.

The Ministry of Education, with NZQA, is developing achievement standards for the Tongan language (lea faka-Tonga). New Lea faka-Tonga achievement standards and associated resources will be available for schools to use at NCEA Levels 1 and 2 in 2014, and Level 3 in 2015. This work supports the goals and targets of the Pasifika Education Plan (PEP). In particular the development of the standards supports the PEP vision which aims to see ‘five out of five Pasifika learners participating, engaging and achieving in education, secure in their identities, languages and cultures and contributing fully to Aotearoa NZ’s social, cultural and economic wellbeing.’

Tongan language is currently assessed via unit standards. From 2015 when Level 3 achievement standards will be available for use, Tongan will be an approved subject for University Entrance. Read more.
